Huge Sculptures for Advertising: Exhibition Figure

As one of our first projects in the area of XXL marketing sculptures, together with the German manga publisher Altraverse, we implemented the main character Scarecrow of the manga “The Secret of Scarecrow” as a huge sculpture for advertising and life-size exhibition exhibitors.

The starting point of the project was for SLS process Optimized 3D model with a height of about 20 cm. First, the 3D model had to be scaled to the right size and disassembled into 60 individual parts due to its high geometric complexity in order to enable efficient production in large format 3D printing. In addition, fasteners were designed and tested to make it easier to assemble the many individual parts later on.

In addition, fasteners were designed and tested to make it easier to assemble the many individual parts later on.

The 3D printing process: materials, technology and sustainability

In the next step, the 60 individual parts were printed on our ThinkBig large-format 3D printers with an installation space of 1 m x 1 m x 2 m. Since we only used three of the large-format 3D printers at the start of the project, it took a correspondingly long time to 3D print the individual components.

White PLA was used as the material for large-format 3D printing, as irregularities on a white surface are very easy to see and PLA is easy to sand and prime. After the individual parts were 3D printed, the supporting material had to be removed. A total of around 30 kg of support material was produced for 3D printing.

Since the sustainability Is very important to our projects, we collect and separate all supporting material and broken prints by type and have them processed back into filament afterwards.

Finally, a box was made individually so that Scarecrow could be transported safely to its first location, the comic and manga trade fair dokomi in Düsseldorf. Thanks to the whole Altraverse team for their trust and good cooperation and our partner Photo Design Gerd Koch for painting.
